INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING IN THE EVENT OF A DISASTER
Help Mason City be prepared for a disaster. We need volunteers that are willing to learn skills to establish a local Volunteer Reception Center (VRC). Established VRCs can be invaluable to your community in times of disaster.
Volunteer Reception training will prepare participants to staff VRCs that will register and place spontaneous volunteers in times of disaster. These centers ensure that volunteers are given meaningful and constructive opportunities to satisfy their desire to assist in a time of need, while not overwhelming the affected community during the disaster response recovery process.
WHAT IS A DISASTER VRC
In the event of a disaster, local emergency services are swamped with calls for help and requests for information while trying to stabilize the situation. At the same time, many volunteers come out with chainsaws, etc. to share their skills. While this is very much appreciated, it can be overwhelming. That is why Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management have partnered together with Mason City Volunteer Center to create and train local volunteers to staff a local Disaster Volunteer Reception Center (VRC).
During a disaster “spontaneous” volunteers will be directed to the VRC where they will fill out an application, be screened and interviewed, are assigned a disaster volunteer opportunity and trained if required. Volunteer opportunities may range from clean-up of debris to serving meals to higher skill based positions. This will make volunteering during a disaster much more organized, efficient, and reduces the possibility of injury.
The VRC is activated by Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management. They let us know when to mobilize (when it is safe) and where to set up. Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management dictates many of the criteria of the volunteers, such as age limits and whether or not a volunteer needs to be screened.
The VRC is coordinated by another group of trained volunteers who have undergone regular exercises.
